Director and Co-Founder Susan Weseen grew up in a small town in the northern British Columbia, a place that inspired her love for the outdoors and planted the seed of environmental stewardship. She has a bachelor's degree in sociology from Harvard University, a master's degree in education from Bank Street College of Education and a master's degree in social psychology from the Graduate Center at CUNY. Susan is currently working on her Ph.D in social psychology.
Currently the librarian at PS 295 in Brooklyn, she is also the garden coordinator of an on-site school garden funded by Slow Food, as well as three off-site gardens, where all students at the school have a chance to experience the joys of growing fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers. The school is part of the Garden to Cafe program, through which 50 New York City schools support their students to produce for the school lunch menu. It is also part of a penpal project with Mel Johnson School in Wawbowden, Manitoba (featured in the film, And This Is My Garden).
